Motorola considers selling off its handset business

After continued profit warnings and falling market share Motorola is considering the option of selling off its mobile handset business. Motorola have struggled to create a replacement to the ground breaking RAZR V3 handset and is now focusing all efforts on profitable business rather than growing market share. Recently Motorola told investors it was going to take longer than expected to turn things around, and this week a press release confirms that they are evaluating 'spinning off' the business.
Who the potential buyer could be remains to be seen but Chinese manufacturer ZTE has been touted along with Samsung and LG.

Handset launches galore!

Over at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas Sony Ericsson and Motorola have announced a brace of new mobile phones.

The first Sony Ericsson is a geometric fashion phone - the Z555i. This handset boasts gesture control, a hidden external OLED display and an optional range of four matching leather bags!
Next up is the W350i, harking back to the days of the 768 and T-series flip style handsets that Sony Ericsson used to be famous for, the W350i is an entry Walkman phone with 1.3 megapixel camera, FM radio and stereo Bluetooth. The W350i will be available in four colours from launch.
Lastly, but offering the best specification of this trio is the W760i. Offering HSDPA, a 3.2 megapixel camera, GPS and a full compliment of Walkman music features it promises to deliver a strong alternative to the popular Nokia N95.

Motorola formally announced the RIZR Z10 which we got wind of last September, but it appears to be taking a little longer to appear than we first thought. No matter, as the Z10 promises to be worth the wait with 30fps video capture from its 3.2 megapixel camera, HSDPA and a memory handling capability of 32GB once it becomes available!
Also leaked last year was the Motorola ROKR E8, this will be quite unique in having a morphing keypad and haptic vibration for the touch sensitive keys. More on that here.

MOTOROKR T505

The MOTOROKR T505 is the first combined in-car hands free and music solution offered by Motorola. It contains a Bluetooth speakerphone and digitial FM transmitter, to enable you to take calls and stream music directly from your phone through your existing car audio system. As an added bonus, the T505 also features a FM digital radio for when you exhaust your phone’s music library.

The T505 uses StationFinder, a technology that tells users which setting on the FM dial is optimal for broadcasting audio from the unit. When receiving calls, the T505 automatically mutes any music playing and audibly announces the Caller-ID, preventing drivers from having to take their eyes off the road.

The MOTOROKR T505 doesn’t need to be installed into the car, simply clipping onto a car’s sunvisor and paired using Motorola’s own EasyPair technology. It is due for a post Christmas launch.
