Nokia S60 Touch user interface

Details of a Nokia patent covering the rumoured Series 60 touch UI have appeared over at Unwired View. In it are ideas for an advanced interface seemingly capable of not just touch based operation but also 3D gesture recognition.
Both one and two finger commands have been developed for selecting and zooming functions or moving files, but to go beyond this and create a touchless 3D device control interface, Nokia suggest using Ultrasonic Transducers (USTs), positioned around the perimeter of the display.
Ultrasonic transducers emit ultrasonic sound waves through the air. When a finger gets into the path of these waves, the signal is reflected back and detected by the transducer. These movements can then be interpreted as various three dimensional gestures.

Nokia slide concept points to N93 successor

GSM Arena have scooped details of a patent application made by Nokia showing a new slide design incorporating possibly a 6 or even 8 megapixel camera. The camera housing can be pulled up and rotated allowing the display to be used as a view finder and doing this also reveals the xenon flash.

The styling is very reminiscent of the N93 and shows Nokia is continuing to push the imaging capabilities of its handsets. There are no indications of the name or other specifications of this handset as yet.

First generation N95 sees improvements

Nokia have just released a firmware update for the first release N95, which should help the phone run at a faster rate. The official blurb on Nokia website says:

This software version includes battery, stability & performance improvements enabling you to run faster and longer - giving you up to three more hours of music (up to 30% increase, from 9h to 12h of music playback). This release also includes a new version of Nokia Maps which provides faster positioning, faster Map Loader, and free 3-day navigation. Free N-Gage demo games are included and other games are available via Download! With the Nokia Music Store now live in the United Kingdom, users can enjoy the convenience of instant over-the-air downloads, regardless of where they are.
After updating your device software to 20.0.015, and restoring your personal data, you can optimise the menu layout by installing the New_Menu_Structure.SIS file. Download and install this file to rearrange your menu layout specifically for SW 20.0.015. Reboot your device to see the menu changes.

One of the major gripes people had with the N95 was its speed, this should change things.

Nokia and O2 "Oyster card phone" in planning

A recent news story from The Guardian explains how Transport for London are working with Nokia and O2 in preparation to launch "a handset with a built-in Oyster card".
The report explains that the scheme will allow travellers to pay for their journeys simply by swiping a compatible mobile phone across the ticket-reading machine. The system appears to be targeted at the tube but could be rolled out for use on buses, trams and some overland train journeys around the capital as well.
Payment would be deducted from a pre-paid account or added to the users phone bill.

Nokia 8800 Arte

Nokia recently released details of two new 8800 series special editions. The Nokia 8800 Arte and Nokia 8800 Sapphire Arte. They boast hardware upgrades over previous 8800 models such as a 3 megapixel camera with autofocus, 1GB of internal memory and the addition of 3G.

The pair also pioneer some exclusive software changes aimed at their high end audience, with the tap-for-time feature and turn-to-mute. The former enables an analogue style clock to be viewed simply by tapping the bottom of the display screen twice. The later mutes an incoming call when the handset is turned face down, using an accelerometer to sense this motion.

Where the 8800 Arte and 8800 Sapphire Arte differ is in their styling. The 8800 Arte comes in black, with the 8800 Sapphire Arte a stylish brown, but with a whole piece sapphire crystal in the centre of the D-pad to further distinguishing it from run of the mill mobiles!
